The origins of the high-waist dresses or like some people would call it; the Empire line, was from the Greco-roman women’s dresses. In that time, the traditional garment for Roman women, where called stola. For the men, Toga. Peplos or Chiffon, worn by the Greek. They where long and belted under the bust, providing support for women and a cool, comfortable outfit suitable for the warm climate. The difference between the two was, the peplos was worn only by women. The Chiton was worn by men and women and could be long or short.
In the 1800’s, after the French revolution, people did not wanted to be seeing as an aristocrat, so the women’s laced corset would be replace by a more natural figure.
