The Museum of Costume and Textile of Québec present….

artist Irène Chiasson

Starting September 27, the Museum of Costume and Textile of Québec will present garments by the artist Irène Chiasson, created mainly between 1966 and 1976. Starting with traditional techniques such as cutting, sewing and crochet, together with weaving and patchwork, by the late 60s Irène Chiasson had distinguished herself by placing these techniques in a modern context and introducing mutations into the world of clothing. By unveiling art garments related just as much to plastic arts and theatre as to its essential utilitatianism, Chiasson was a real pioneer at a time when Quebec’s fashion world was particularly rarefied.

Just as she sustained a variety of traditional practices, she also introduced new materials like plastic, artificial leather and synthetic fabrics. She also employed industrial techniques like die cutting and high-frequency welding for some of her vinyl clothing creations. Chiasson worked on the shape and design of clothing, with the resulting works revealing connections between elements of modern fashion (the miniskirt, for example) and her own flights of fancy (modular imitation-leather objects, Quatre Saisons garments). She also designed transformable, versatile outfits like garment/tapestries. By doing so, the artist deliberately aligned herself with the imperatives of her time: to open new creative avenues and new social dimensions of art.
